JA Nova Scotia believes in the boundless potential of young people and is committed to supporting today’s youth and tomorrow’s workforce with financial health, workplace readiness and entrepreneurship. We work with teachers across Nova Scotia and the current curriculum by offering hands-on elements and interactive activities that support learning outcomes. We provide youth of all ages opportunities to develop financial literacy, entrepreneurship, and workplace readiness skills.

We believe in the power of partnership and collaboration to ensure that all programs are offered to teachers at no cost, offers youth free self-directed learning and barrier relief so no youth is left behind. As a Charter of JA Canada we are thankful for the support of the following national funders, helping us reach more youth across the province.

TD Support our Dollars with Sense program available to youth in grades 7 to 9. Dollars with Sense is a fun and interactive, hands-on program that helps students develop financial literacy skills, so they can make informed decisions about their finances today and set goals for their financial future.

With the support of TD the curriculum supports students to:

  • acquire knowledge and understanding of a broad range of financial concepts and practices
  • use critical thinking skills to make sound financial decisions
  • communicate an understanding of a range of financial and money management concepts
  • apply and express acquired financial knowledge in oral and written forms

The program can be teacher led, can include volunteers who can present specific modules to the classes and is available as a self-directed program on our Campus. The program is available in both French and English and you can learn more at https://janovascotia.ca/programs/dollars-with-sense/.

Z Zurich Foundation is a new funder, supporting the pilot of our Success Skills program available to youth in grades 8 to 10. Success Skills will help youth identify and build a toolkit of transferable skills that will enable them to increase resilience and improve outcomes through challenging situations.

With the support of Z Zurich Foundation the curriculum supports students to:

  • Define success.
  • Recognise the importance of experiential learning as as method of career research.
  • Demonstrate the relationships between learning and work.
  • Develop awareness of self-efficacy in skill attainment and career development.
  • Develop an understanding of self-efficacy and how believing in one’s ability to complete a task/research a goal can contribute to achieving success.

The program can be teacher led and is available as a self-directed program on our Campus. The program is currently only available in English and you can learn more at https://janovascotia.ca/programs/success-skills/.

The CIBC Foundation has a focus on Financial Health and Entrepreneurship and helps fund our Company Program, available to youth in grades 9 to 12. Over a four-month period, students are given the opportunity to learn how to organize and operate a small enterprise with the support of volunteer mentors and advisors.

With the support of the CIBC Foundation the curriculum supports students to:

  • Solve real business challenges.
  • Gather data, evaluate choices and create a business plan.
  • Launch a business and raise capital for start-up.
  • Develop and market a product or service.
  • Work in a team environment, learning about teamwork, responsibility and business ethics.
  • Maintain and analyze financial records.
  • Set sales goals and make effective sales pitches.

The Economics for Success program is available to grades 8 to and as an interactive program designed to encourage students to consider how they can prepare to enter the world of work. This preparation involves identifying personal interests, skills, strengths, and passions; mapping them to career clusters; learning to budget; developing interviewing skills and strategies to achieve educational and career goals.

With the support of the Accenture the curriculum supports students to:

  • Learn to set long-term goals.
  • Prepare a monthly budget for independent living.
  • Discover wage deductions and the difference between gross and net pay.
  • Explore the concept of networking.
  • Learn the value of developing a strong personal brand.

Economics for Success can be teacher led, can include volunteers who can present specific modules to the classes and is available as a self-directed program on our Campus. Accenture offers support to a number of programs. These include Economics for Success and Our Business World and, in part, the Dollars with Sense Program.

Our Business World, available to students in grades 5 and 6, is an interactive program designed to encourage students to explore how businesses are created and what factors are involved in helping a business thrive.

With the support of the Accenture the curriculum supports students to:

  • Explore where customers/clients come from and how to keep them.
  • Discuss where income and expenses come from and learn how a business makes a profit.
  • Learn how businesses can contribute to the well-being of the community.
  • Learn about the history of some Canadian businesses and how they’ve changed over time.
  • Understand the importance of innovation.
  • Describe what makes an entrepreneur innovative.
